People of Ontario, 1600-1900 v.1-3 REF 929.3713 Peo

It alphabetically lists the name entries of 250 000 people, compiled from books, maps, documents, and films. This is helpful because both male and female names are listed. However, its downfall is that the entry does not specify why the person was recorded, just what book, etc, they appeared in. To understand the listing, first look at the capital letters in brackets (ie PAT) that follow (not all listings have this). This represents the persons occupation or identifying trait (ie woman, aboriginal). The legend for these codes is located at the back of the book in Appendix A. Next, there is a capital letter followed by four numbers (ie L1878). The numbers represent the year that the person was recorded, and the letter indicates their status. B stands for birth, or baptismal, M for married, D for death, and L means that they were living. After is a source code (ie #ON1-123). The letters and number of the first part indicate which document the person’s name appeared. The list of documents is in the back, Appendix C.
